This 5"x7" colored pencil pet portrait is a commission for an old time friend of mine and my sister's. She is buying this as a present for her boyfriend who is serving in the armed forces overseas. She shared with me how difficult it is to find new and unique gift ideas, so a pet portrait really satisfies that need. I am happy and honored to be a part of their communication.

I know it is hard to let a loved one serve in the military, to be separated and reacquainted many times over. My sister's husband has been training to be a flight medic and they have gone months without seeing each other in person. My cousin and her husband both serve in the Navy and spent the first year of their marriage serving in separate countries. Another one of my cousins served in the Marines and many of my extended family as well. They have all sacrificed to a level that amazes me. Helping our families stay connected with our soldiers is an honor for me. I am working on this portrait of Tucker with great pride in our armed forces, with admiration for their courage and gratitude for their willingness to serve.

This is a colored pencil piece I am doing for Design House 2010 and Jennifer Bellamy Design. The paper for this work of art is watercolor cotton rag stained with coffee. The second stage, outlining the subject matter is complete and I am now filling in some color with colored pencil and turpenoid. The first step in shading this way is color selection. It is important to choose colors that will thin to a desired tone when turpenoid is applied. In this case, I used a combination of blue slate, indigo blue, imperial violet and a wee bit of black. I filled the whole colored area with an even and moderate layer of blue slate. On top of this, I lightly shaded imperial violet and indigo blue in even measure. As a final thought I put an extremely light amount of black colored pencil down just to mute the final color. Using a q-tip soaked in turpenoid I saturated the shaded area and made small circular strokes to achieve a modest amount of grape detail. I will scan again soon so follow along!

This is a piece I am doing for my own enjoyment and for promotional purposes. I did not take the photograph or purchase rights to it, so the artwork is not for sale. I hope to have the ability to do NFL players in the future, so for now I plan to send a print to the Panthers and see if I get a response. If not, I still have a great image of one of my favorite football players.

Title: Watchful Eyes
This is a piece I did for my own enjoyment. I took the photograph of a wolf-dog at The Full Moon Farm near Black Mountain, NC. This wolf-dog has the most intimidating and beautiful eyes. I noticed that he never took his eye off of me, even after we met. Many of the wolf-dogs were aware that I was new and tended to immediately position themselves downwind.
A wee bit eerie.

Here's what's on the drawing board this week. There are many complexities to consider when drawing water. I found it helpful to start with what lies beneath the surface and build up layers of pencil. So drawing the stones that lay in the creek bed first and then detailing the ripples.

The most amazing thing happened this week. I was returning to my shop after helping a friend. It was pouring rain so I was amazed to see a man with an easel huddled under an umbrella painting in the parking lot. I had to talk to him. His painting was very nice, an oil painting with beads of water all over it(rain). We talked briefly and I asked, "Why are you painting in the rain?" He replied, "It's my last day in town." I asked him for his website and he said check out www.dinotopia.com

I thought that sounds familiar, but I couldn't place it. I walked up to my shop checked out the site and realized I had spoken with James Gurney! I ran back down in the rain and said, "You're James Gurney!" He was so humble...amazing. His wife got out of the car and held her umbrella over my head. Later, they visited my shop. I'm sorry I forgot to get a picture with them but what a cool happening. Check out his website. His work is phenominal!

SCBWI 9th Annual Midwinter Conference

I had a wonderful experience in NYC. The conference was conducive to connecting and communicating with an incredibly creative collection of creators...to say the least.

The portfolio winner was Jim Carroll

Another artist I was really impressed with was Grace Lee

She is incredibly gifted and will be successful. I also found out she is connected with some of the creators of Flight...a personal favorite.

There are great things happening in 2008. Please pray that God will use my work and my effort for his glory!

Illustrating a Children's Book

There are 4 steps I follow when bringing an author's work to life. I am using my first published work as an example:

STEP 1: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Using the author's description, I strive to bring the character to life. For example, this author wanted a lively and mischievous bear, alongside a boy that was amused, and at times bewildered, by the bear's antics.

STEP 2: LAYOUT DESIGN RD. 1
Using the approved character design, I then create a time, place and feel for the characters to act out the story. We want to put the characters on the right stage.

STEP 3: LAYOUT DESIGN RD. 2
At this stage, I really work on the layout. The page needs to have a good flow and communicate in concert with the author's wording.

STEP 4: FINAL ILLUSTRATIONS
Now that the "skeleton" is solid, I go to the studio and really buckle down. I get a hot cup of coffee and delve into the journey. At the end of a month or two we have a final product that captivates the reader and takes the author's words into the stratosphere!
